A Little Bull – Tonight on Farm Town Weekly

Monday, July 6th, 2009

That’s Just Bull! I am still on the hunt for the perfect name for my little Farm Town bull. So far I have only a few name suggestions, but they are all pretty good and I’ll share them with you tonight on the show. If you can think of a good name, please make your suggestion in a reply to this post or join me live on TalkShoe tonight at 7:30 Central. More information about how to join the live show will be posted shortly.

Did You Vote? We will talk briefly about the current Farm Town Weekly poll regarding Farm Town vs. FarmVille. Please take a second and vote before the show starts this evening.

New Ideas for Farm Town I began to get ideas on how the game might be improved and for things I wanted to see added to Farm Town from nearly the beginning of my farm. I talk with neighbors and visit the forums where new ideas are discussed and I thought tonight would be a good time to bring this topic onto the show.

Do you have a new idea for Farm Town? Please join me live on the show tonight so we can hear your idea. Who knows, maybe SlashKey will be listening :-)

Shout-outs I love to give a little Shout-out to my friends and neighbors and I would be happy to do the same for you. Send you Shout-outs to me using the contact form here on the site or by posting in here in a reply.

Again, more details on how to join the live show will follow shortly after this post is published, within the next 30 minutes.

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Notice we now have a new POLL feature on our website where we can ask members and listeners to share their opinions on a variety of topics. In our first poll we ask, “Is FarmVille by Zynga an unfair copy of Farm Town by SlashKey?”

If you want to know what I think about this issue, you will have to listen to Episode One of Farm Town Weekly. If you want me to know what you think, first go and vote on the poll by selection the answer that most closely matches your opinion. Second, leave a reply to this post and I will share it next Monday on the live show. Remember you need to log into the website in order to post reply comments.

If you have an idea for our next or future poll, please send your idea to me using our online contact form. You can find this under Page Menu in the right sidebar of Farm Town Weekly

Tater The Tycoon and Ms Kelleelyn

Awe Inspiring Kelleelyn

Awe Inspiring Kelleelyn

Since last evening I have been able to share in celebrating the Farm Town Achievements of two special neighbor. As I was writing my last post about Big Mike becoming a Green Wizard, I was interupted to share the “AWE INSPIRING” excitement with our Chairman of the Board (Jethros’ Wife) Ms. Kelleelyn as she hit level 30.

It seems like just the other day that Kelleelyn and I were over harvesting for TATER HEAD and fighting over cabbage. Okay, it was just the other day and although neither of us need coin, it was fun to see who could steal cabbage out from under the others harvester.

Ms. Kelleelyn has been AWE INSPIRING me for the last 24 years. Now she can inspire the Farm Town community to keep plowing, planting, and having fun with their neighbors as they strive for this achievement.

I woke early this morning and after pushing the button to start the pot of coffee to brewing which Kelleelyn had prepared in advance, I came down to the office to wait the 8-10 minutes for it to complete the brew. They say a microwave minute is the longest. I would have to agree, but those minutes that click by ever so slowly as you wait for that first cup of morning coffee to reach your hand would have to measure a close second.

I started up my tractor (booted my computer) to let it warm up a while before I pointed it towards Farm Town. Once I hit the farm I plowed and then replanted a field area that I had left harvested before shutting down last night. With a fresh cup of coffee in hand, a new crop of grapes in the ground, and a good reason to make a post on Farm Town Weekly, here I had all the ingredients for an enjoyable Saturday morning.

TATER the TYCOON

TATER the TYCOON

It is one thing to have coffee in hand, but I needed a little time for it to hit my head so I decided to kill a few minutes by doing some chores for my Farm Town neighbors. I pulled over and grabbed the messages that were waiting for me in my Farm Town mailbox. Good news! TATER HEAD, also known as Jamie H. of Bowling Green, Kentucky has become a Farm Town Tycoon by achieving level 33!

Congratulations to Kelleelyn and Jamie H. Until next time, Happy Farming!

Big Mike Takes The Industry to Level 34

The Industry

The Industry (click for large view)

Listeners will recall my “shout-out” to a friend and neighbour, “Big Mike” of Bowling Green, Kentucky. In case you missed it, you can listen to the second pilot episode and hear a little about Big Mikes’ farming style.

Always one to keep it simple and moving steadily forward, Big Mike has been plowing and planting his farm, “The Industry” each evening while keeping his eye out for any “noobies” that might need a little help getting started with their own Farm Town farm. I was lucky enough to be one of those noobies on the evening when he hired me to come and work at The Industry.

After letting me harvest his onion fields which took up around 1/3 of his entire farm, I had enough coin to plant whatever seed I wanted at the time and buy some fence for my animals. Okay, no big deal right? It is just a game after all. That is what I would likely be thinking if I was new to the game or playing only for Farm Town Cash, experience points, and to reach new levels. In fact, if it were those things that were all that was to my initial interaction with Michael, I doubt I would remember much if anything at all about that evening.

After harvesting and some polite chit-chat, Big Mike added me to his Buddy List and I went on my merry way. It might have been the next evening, or a couple evenings later that Big Mike popped onto my little 12×12 farm and asked if I would like to do some more harvesting for him. He also told me that he had a “real life” friend that plays Farm Town and that he would like to introduce us. This way and that way, I found myself on another big farm with a brand new buddy, “TATER HEAD” (Jamie H.).

Big Mike and Jamie were 2 of my first 8 neighbors and Kelleelyn and I have both had lots of fun farming and goofing around with each of them. During my first harvest for Jamie, he introduced me to another gent, “Gary” who also has a ton of Farm Town talent. Gary and I shared the harvest on TATERS’ farm and we all made polite chit-chat until the fields were picked clean.

It was neither Big Mike, Jamie, or Gary that caused me to become such a Farm Town fan. My passion for the game and desire to make my little contribution as a Beta Tester grew from the sense of community formed by these and several others while spending a little of their time online together as virtual neighbors, tending to each others virtual farms, and helping other noobies “find their game.”

Without jumping too far off topic here, somewhere between meeting Big Mike and Jamie I became buddies, then neighbors with Whats Her Name and her husband Goober. Soon I was their virtual neighbor along with Teri, “Goobers MAH.”  While harvesting one evening for Teri, I became buddies with Tina. Today, Tina and her new husband David are also my neighbors. These connections are what sparked the idea for my Farm Town Weekly catch-phrase, “Planting Community and Harvesting Friendships.”

The way I see it, in order to build community, you must first plow a space in which it can grow. Although I have plenty of good neighbors in my Farm Town, I still to this day go to the Farmers Market on occasion to look for a noobie to help them get started.

Who knows, maybe the next new farmer I hire at the Market will eventually become a Green Wizard just like Big Mike did this evening. “Oh, did I fail to mention that?” Excuse me for drifting through memories as I do have the honor of delivering the news to our little virtual community here that indeed, Big Mike of Bowling Green, Kentucky hit level 34 this very evening.

Michael is my first and only neighbor to have achieved the Green Wizard status so far. Our Chairman of the Board, Ms. Kelleelyn and good neighbor, TATER HEAD were on the scene at The Industry to cheer for Big Mike and share his excitement. Congratulations Michael!!!

I was not online for that big moment but no worries, the celebration continues because I get to give Big Mike something that Farm Town could not deliver in honor of his achievement.

Big Mike, for your achievement of reaching level 34, Green Wizard I would like to offer my congratulations along with this request that you accept a virtual seat here on the Board of Directors of Farm Town Weekly. As a result of reaching this achievement within our community, and by accepting your seat here, you will go down in Farm Town Weekly history as the first and only so far to have reach this status. Only those that follow you in reaching Green Wizard status will ever be offered this honor.

I hope everyone will take some time away from farming this coming Monday evening at 7:30 Central for the first Live Episode of Farm Town Weekly. More details on exactly how to call into the show are coming soon.

Give Your Good Neighbors a Shout-out!
A farmer will often send a facebook smile, drink, hug, joke or other automated greeting to a neighbor just to say hello. Gifts for their farm are also a way to let them know you are thinking of them. Although these are tons of fun and a good way to add interactivity to your day, I’m sure you will agree that these are all pretty automated and generic ways to connect. It is pretty easy after all to click on your neighbors (facebook friends) name and click send.

Like the show, this post is about taking community to the next level and getting a little more bang for your Farm Town coin. Here is a place where you can give a friendly Shout-out and say a little more about that special neighbor or farming friend that deserves a little recognition. Shout-out are going to be a regular feature of Farm Town Weekly and soon you will be able to join me live and have your shout-outs recorded and shared with other listeners. For those who are too shy to join me live but would love to have me pass a shout-out along to a friend, all you need to do is post your shout-out in a Reply to this post.

Just login using the User Menu in the lower right side of this page, write your shout-out text in a reply here, and be sure to include “Shout-outs” in the Tage-it box below. Until next time, Happy Farming!
